The latest FDA advisory committee report on finasteride, its active ingredient, warns men and women that its effects are permanent and can even last for up to a year, a doctor said.
The study was presented Thursday at the American Society of Urology Society annual meeting, in San Diego.
“The most significant problem with finasteride is the temporary nature of the effects,” said Dr. John S. Kupfer, a urologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Milwaukee.
Kupfer said the drug, which is sold under the brand name Propecia, is used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Propecia and its generic equivalent, finasteride, are also used off-label for hair loss in men and women.
The study is the first FDA review of finasteride’s effects. In 2010, it was the first drug approved for hair loss in men.
According to the FDA, finasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate.
In the study, Kupfer said the effect is temporary and may last for as long as six months, or more. He noted that it does not include men who have diabetes and who have had prostate cancer.
“I can’t tell you how many men who have prostate cancer in this study have been able to stop using finasteride,” Kupfer said.
The study was sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology, and was conducted by the American Urological Association.
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved finasteride.
It is also not approved for hair loss in women, and a separate study in Canada is not expected until next year.
In a statement, Kupfer said the results are based on the drug’s use in men and on animal data showing it can shrink prostate and bladder walls.
“We believe that finasteride works best in men who are looking to have sex and have a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
